Reno Omokri has announced that Mexico has approved his appointment as Nigeria’s ambassador to the country.

Omokri disclosed this in a post shared on X on Tuesday, saying the Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Mexico in Abuja, José Manuel Briseño Flores, delivered the agrément confirming the Mexican government’s acceptance of his appointment.

“To God be the glory, the Chargé d’affaires of the Embassy of the United Mexican States in Abuja, Mr José Manuel Briseño Flores, today in Abuja delivered the agrément from the Government of the United Mexican States accepting me, Bemigho Reno Omokri, to serve as Ambassador Extraordinaire and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United Mexican States, with concurrent accreditation to the Republic of Guatemala, the Republic of Honduras, and the Republic of Nicaragua, to the Director of Protocol of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency, Ambassador Babagana Wakil,” he wrote.

He is also to serve as Nigeria’s ambassador to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, with concurrent accreditation to the three countries.

President Bola Tinubu nominated Omokri for an ambassadorial position in November 2025, alongside several other nominees, including former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, and former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mahmood Yakubu.

The Senate confirmed Omokri and other ambassadorial nominees in December 2025, while Tinubu approved the posting of 65 ambassadors-designate and high commissioners to their respective countries on March 6, 2026. Omokri was assigned to Mexico City.

However, his posting remained among those awaiting formal diplomatic approval from the host country.

In August, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Mexico and Japan were among the countries yet to communicate formal acceptance of two outstanding ambassadorial appointments. The ministry said it was engaging the countries and expressed confidence that the approvals would be conveyed in due course.

Omokri had also dismissed speculation that Mexico had rejected his appointment.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today in June, he said the delay was linked to diplomatic processes and preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which Mexico is co-hosting with the United States and Canada.

Agrément is the formal consent a country gives before an ambassador nominated by another country can be appointed to serve there.

Omokri previously served as a media aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan and is known for his political commentary.
