The House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee has summoned the Accountant-General of the Federation, Mr Shamseldeen Babatunde Ogunjimi, to appear before it on Monday, July 13, over what it described as his repeated failure to honour its invitations and submit requested documents.
The committee, chaired by Rep. Bamidele Salam, issued what it termed a final invitation to the AGF during its sitting on Tuesday, expressing concern over what members described as his “non-responsive” attitude to the committee’s oversight responsibilities.
The lawmakers said that despite several letters sent to the Office of the Accountant-General in recent months, Ogunjimi had neither appeared before the committee nor provided critical documents required for its investigations and other constitutional duties.
The committee also faulted what it described as the Accountant-General’s lack of diligence in rendering the accounts of his office and preparing the country’s consolidated financial statements.
Salam said the conduct of the AGF fell short of the standard expected of the nation’s chief accounting officer.
He added that the committee expected a cordial working relationship with the Office of the Accountant-General, given its constitutional responsibility to oversee public financial management and ensure accountability in the use of public funds.
Meanwhile, the committee also issued final invitations to six Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) whose chief accounting officers had repeatedly failed to honour previous invitations.
The committee directed the accounting officers of the agencies, and the permanent secretaries in the case of the ministries, to appear before it on Monday, July 13.
