A protest has erupted in Birnin Gwari town, the headquarters of Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State, following the killing of a commercial driver and the abduction of nine others in separate attacks by suspected “repentant” bandits.
The protest was triggered by the killing of Ibrahim Adamu, a grandson of a traditional ruler in the Birnin Gwari Emirate, who was reportedly murdered along the Kaduna–Birnin Gwari Road, as well as the abduction of farmers in a village within the area.
A source who spoke to Sahara Reporters said angry residents, mainly youths, took to the streets and chased herders and other Fulani residents out of the town following continued attacks by suspected “repentant” bandits in the area.
The source added that the situation could have resulted in a breakdown of law and order but was brought under control after the intervention of security forces, traditional rulers and community leaders.
It was gathered that some herders and other Fulani residents travelling in and out of the town fled amid fears of possible reprisals.
The development followed two separate attacks in which suspected bandits killed Adamu and abducted nine others along the Kaduna–Birnin Gwari Road and a village within Birnin Gwari Local Government Area.
Adamu, a commercial driver, was reportedly killed at Kwanan Giginya along the Kaduna–Birnin Gwari highway when armed men opened fire on his vehicle. About five passengers were also said to have been abducted during the attack.
In a separate incident, four farmers were reportedly kidnapped while working on their farms in the Kurgi area of the local government.
The attacks have heightened concerns over insecurity along the Kaduna–Birnin Gwari axis, with residents calling on security agencies to increase patrols and strengthen their presence in vulnerable communities.
