Pastor Adeboye, Bishop Oyedepo Seek US Support Against Terrorism in Nigeria

The General Overseer of The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, and the Presiding Bishop of Winners’ Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo, have appealed to the United States to increase its support for Nigeria’s fight against terrorism, warning that worsening insecurity is pushing the country towards a dangerous point.

The call was made during the 2026 Faith Defender Award Gala held on June 23 at the Hilton Garden Inn on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., according to a statement signed by the President of Save Nigeria Group USA, Stephen Osemwegie.

Speaking at the event, Adeboye urged the United States and its allies to do more to assist Nigeria in tackling insecurity.

“If you want to help us, help us more. No matter who is in office in Nigeria, only God can help us. Use your influence to help us,” the cleric emphasised.

He also praised U.S. President Donald Trump for his efforts to fight terrorism, although he said he did not agree with all of his positions.

“Thank God for Trump. He means business,” he added.

In a keynote address delivered on his behalf, Oyedepo described Nigeria’s security situation as critical, saying the country was “virtually at the brink of collapse” because of persistent terrorist attacks and violence.

“My heart bleeds,” he said, as he backed proposed U.S. legislation intended to strengthen accountability for terrorism-related atrocities in Nigeria.

Other speakers at the event also called for stronger international action.

Former U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom, Sam Brownback, warned that the country faced serious consequences if the security crisis continued unchecked.

“Nigeria is at a fork in the road. Address this insecurity or face violent civil unrest,” he noted.

Human rights advocate Dr Katrina Swett urged Washington to play a greater role in defending religious freedom and supporting victims of extremist violence.

“The future is in the hands of Nigerians, but America has powerful leverage to do more,” she added.

Osemwegie, who leads Save Nigeria Group USA, appealed to the U.S. Congress to pass the Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act, saying the proposed law would strengthen accountability for terrorism-related crimes.

The event, themed “Thank You, America,” concluded a week-long advocacy campaign during which participants met with U.S. lawmakers to seek greater international cooperation in the fight against terrorism.

Trump was also presented with the 2026 Faith Defender Award in recognition of what the organisers described as his administration’s commitment to promoting religious freedom and combating terrorism globally.
