JUST IN: Court Fixes Judgement in Kanu’s Alleged Terrorism Trial

The Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed 20 November for judgement in the seven-count terrorism charge filed by the Federal Government against the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu.

Justice James Omotosho fixed the date after Kanu did not open his defence within the six days earlier allotted to him.

Kanu, who is now representing himself after disengaging his lawyers, instead returned on Friday with a fresh motion challenging the competence of the charge and the jurisdiction of the court to try him.

The court had briefly stood the matter down for one hour after the defendant indicated he was ready to present his defence. But in the process he filed the new application, insisting that his prosecution was based on a non-existent law.

He insisted that the charge was brought under the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act, a law he says is no longer recognised.
