The political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections is witnessing a shift as five outgoing All Progressives Congress (APC) governors prepare to move from executive office to the legislative arm. The governors have declared interest in senatorial seats and submitted their nomination forms ahead of the party’s primaries scheduled for May 18.
The development reflects early realignment within the ruling party as key figures position themselves for federal legislative roles after their governorship terms.
• Ahmadu Fintiri — Adamawa State
Ahmadu Fintiri is contesting the Adamawa North senatorial seat. His ambition has received strong backing following the withdrawal of Senator Amos Yohanna, who stepped down and declared support for the governor, saying the decision was taken in the interest of the constituency.
• Babagana Zulum — Borno State
Babagana Zulum has obtained nomination forms for the Borno Central senatorial seat. However, his ambition is expected to face internal resistance within the party, with some factions reportedly backing incumbent Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan (SAN) for re-election.
• Abdullahi Sule — Nasarawa State
Abdullahi Sule is seeking the Nasarawa North senatorial seat, which became vacant following the death of Senator Godiya Akwashiki (SDP) in December 2025. His nomination forms were procured by a coalition of stakeholders, and he has accepted the call to contest, citing continued service at the federal level as his motivation.
• Dapo Abiodun — Ogun State
Dapo Abiodun is contesting the Ogun East senatorial seat, setting up a competitive race with incumbent Senator Gbenga Daniel, a former governor, who has also declared his intention to retain the seat despite growing support for Abiodun within sections of the party.
• Mai Mala Buni — Yobe State
Mai Mala Buni is positioned for the Yobe East senatorial seat. His path appears more favourable after incumbent Senator Musa Mustapha (Kulas) opted not to seek re-election and instead endorsed the governor.
