Sanwo-Olu not asked to resign — Lagos Govt

The Lagos State Government has dismissed reports alleging that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was asked to resign on health grounds, describing the claims as false and baseless.

In a statement issued by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, the government rejected the report and faulted what it described as a pattern of misinformation from the platform behind the story.

He said the governor remains in good health, mentally fit, and continues to discharge his duties without interruption.

“This report is false in its entirety. Nobody has asked the Lagos Governor to resign-this is another fake news, which has become a pattern of Sahara Reporters. Governor Sanwo-Olu remains in good health, of sound mind, and is actively discharging his duties as Governor of Lagos State,” the statement said.

The clarification followed an online publication claiming the governor was being pressured to step down over alleged health concerns, with suggestions that Deputy Governor Kadri Obafemi Hamzat was being positioned to take over.

“These reports are not only false, they are an intentional attempt to mislead the public,” Akosile stated. “The Governor is not under any pressure to resign, nor has anyone demanded his resignation. He is well, in excellent health, and continues to discharge his responsibilities with commitment.”

He explained that the governor recently held a routine meeting with the Deputy Governor, who visited to formally notify him of his intention to contest the governorship in the next election cycle, adding that the meeting was cordial and in line with normal political engagement.

Akosile said the government decided to respond to the report to prevent misinformation and reassure the public, noting that it would ordinarily ignore such claims.

“In light of the growing disinformation, we feel it is necessary to address these malicious rumours. The people of Lagos deserve to know the truth,” he added.

The government urged the public to disregard the report and avoid spreading unverified information.
