President Bola Tinubu’s directive that all political appointees seeking elective office must resign by 31 March 2026 has set the stage for a political shake-up.
The order, signed by Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, is rooted in Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026: “All affected officials are required to submit their formal resignation letters through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation not later than March 31, 2026.”
Bayo Adelabu – Minister of Power (Oyo State)
Twice defeated in Oyo’s governorship race, Adelabu remains undeterred. His October 2025 declaration was emphatic: “It is our turn — it is my turn in 2027, as God has revealed it. Adelabu! Àwálòkàn! Penkelemesi Èmilòkàn!” He frames his ambition as resilience rewarded.
Muhammad Ali Pate – Minister of Health (Bauchi State)
Globally respected, Pate has long eyed Bauchi’s governorship. His old school association endorsed him: “Prof Mohammed Ali Pate is best man for the job.” His candidacy is seen as a bridge between international expertise and local needs.
Abubakar Kyari – Minister of Agriculture (Borno State)
A veteran of the House and Senate, Kyari is tipped by grassroots groups to succeed Governor Zulum. His career reflects steady loyalty and quiet influence.
Saidu Alkali – Minister of Transportation (Gombe State)
A three-term senator, Alkali is believed to be working from Abuja to secure APC’s governorship ticket. His ambition is rooted in legislative experience and strong networks.
Yusuf Maitama Tuggar – Minister of Foreign Affairs (Bauchi State)
Twice defeated in past governorship bids, Tuggar remains persistent. The Bauchi South Concern Citizens Movement urged him to contest, stressing: “Bauchi South has held the position since 1999.” His campaign is framed as justice and balance.
Bosun Tijani – Minister of Communications (Ogun State)
A technocrat and co-founder of Co-Creation Hub, Tijani symbolises generational change. Though undeclared, whispers suggest he may eye Ogun’s governorship, representing innovation-driven leadership.
