Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has clashed again with some All Progressives Congress (APC) governors over the proposed Rainbow Coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.
The Punch reports that Wike accused some APC governors of opposing the coalition because of their political interests, including plans to influence the next leadership of the National Assembly.
Speaking on TVC’s Journalists’ Hangout, Wike maintained that the coalition would mobilise support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election while allowing politicians to support candidates of their choice in governorship and legislative elections.
He specifically alleged that Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, Hope Uzodimma, was positioning himself to become Senate President after leaving office.
Wike also declared that he would not support Uzodimma for the position.
“Life or death, I will never support a character of Hope Uzodimma to be the Senate President of Nigeria. Everybody knows that,” he said.
His comments came after APC governors declared that they would not support any political arrangement capable of weakening the party or affecting its candidates in the 2027 elections.
Wike, however, argued that supporting Tinubu for President did not require politicians to abandon candidates of other parties in governorship and legislative contests. He cited the 2023 election, when members of the G5 supported Tinubu for President while their parties retained candidates for other positions.
He also dismissed reports that Tinubu had agreed to concede nine states to the PDP or the Rainbow Coalition, challenging those making the claim to identify the states involved.
The FCT minister said his priority remained mobilising support for Tinubu’s re-election and maintained that the coalition was not designed to weaken or take over the APC.
