The Delta state government has suspended Reuben Izeze, commissioner for works (highway and urban roads), indefinitely over allegations linking him to the assault of Simon Mudi, senior special assistant on protocol to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
The suspension takes immediate effect.
The state government announced the decision in a statement signed by Kingsley Emu, secretary to the state government, on Monday.
According to the statement, the suspension is to allow security agencies to conduct an impartial investigation.
“The suspension is to enable the security agencies to carry out an unbiased investigation of allegations associating him with the assault on the Senior Special Assistant on Protocol, Mr Simon Mudi, also known as Temple, at the Petroleum Training Institute, PTI, Effurun, recently,” the statement reads.
The development comes after a video surfaced showing Mudi being chased and repeatedly struck with bottles and chairs during a political meeting at the PTI Conference Centre in Effurun on Sunday.
The footage shows chaotic scenes as several men pursued Mudi as he attempted to escape.
Mudi was later seen receiving treatment in hospital with visible bruises and a bloodied head, while wearing an APC-branded safari.
The government said the decision was necessary to ensure that the investigation was conducted without interference.
It reaffirmed that public safety and the maintenance of law and order remain priorities of the administration.
“The state government remains committed to the maintenance of public safety in all circumstances which guarantees law and order and the sanctity of lives,” it added.
The government said the principle applied “even when institutions of state are involved”.
The suspension followed an alleged confrontation between Izeze and Mudi at the PTI in Effurun.
The circumstances surrounding the incident are expected to form part of the investigation by security agencies.
The state government did not disclose how long the investigation would last or whether Izeze would be reinstated afterwards.
