The National Union of Okitipupa Local Government Students (NUOLGS) has called on Ondo State Governor, Dr Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, to work with relevant stakeholders to facilitate the urgent rehabilitation of the Ore–Okitipupa Road.
The union also appealed to the member representing Okitipupa/Irele Federal Constituency, Hon. Jimi Odimayo; the member representing Ilaje/Ese-Odo Federal Constituency, Hon. Donald Ojogo; the Ondo State representative on the Governing Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Hon. Otito Atikase; the Chairman of the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC), Hon. Biyi Poroye; the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC); the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA); and the Federal Ministry of Works to urgently collaborate on the rehabilitation of the strategic federal road.
In a statement dated 20 July, 2026, signed by the National President, Prince Adeoye Omoleminu, and the National General Secretary, Comrade Gbodi Oluwaseun, and broadcast by the Public Relations Officer, Senator Adegeye John Oluwafemi, the union said the appeal formed part of its commitment to community service, public safety and the welfare of students and residents.
The statement disclosed that the leadership of NUOLGS embarked on a working visit to the failed portions of the Ore–Okitipupa Road, where members carried out a temporary intervention by clearing blocked drainage channels and undertaking minor palliative works to ease the flow of erosion and improve movement for motorists and other road users.
According to the statement, the intervention was only a demonstration of the union’s concern for the suffering of the people and not a lasting solution, noting that the extent of the damage far exceeds what students and members of the community can address on their own.
The union maintained that only a coordinated intervention involving the Ondo State Government, members of the National Assembly representing Ondo South, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC), the Federal Ministry of Works and the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) can deliver the comprehensive rehabilitation and reconstruction the road urgently requires.
NUOLGS expressed deep concern over the worsening condition of the Ore–Okitipupa Road, describing it as a major threat to lives, economic activities and the educational advancement of thousands of students who travel along the corridor daily.
The union described the Ore–Okitipupa Road as one of the most strategic roads linking Ondo South with other parts of Nigeria but lamented that it has deteriorated into a dangerous route marked by deep gullies, failed sections, severe erosion, frequent accidents, vehicle breakdowns, increased transportation costs and unimaginable hardship for commuters.
The inspection and advocacy visit was led by the National President of NUOLGS, Prince Adeoye Omoleminu, alongside members of the National Executive Council, the National President of Community Presidents in Okitipupa Local Government and the President of the National Association of Ondo State Students (NAOSS), OAUSTECH Chapter.
During the visit, the delegation interacted with commercial drivers, private motorists, traders, students and residents, many of whom recounted accidents, damaged vehicles, delayed journeys, rising transport fares and the fear they endure whenever they travel on the highway.
While acknowledging previous efforts by government and relevant agencies towards infrastructure development, the union stressed that the current condition of the Ore–Okitipupa Road demands immediate attention, warning that every passing day without meaningful intervention exposes innocent citizens to avoidable accidents, economic losses and unnecessary hardship.
NUOLGS appealed to Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, Hon. Jimi Odimayo, Hon. Donald Ojogo, Hon. Otito Atikase, Hon. Biyi Poroye, the leadership of the NDDC and other stakeholders to use their respective offices and influence to engage, lobby and work closely with the Federal Ministry of Works and the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to secure immediate repairs and the complete reconstruction of the Ore–Okitipupa Road.
The union said meaningful development can only be achieved through collaboration, stressing that the responsibility for rehabilitating the road should not rest on one institution alone but requires the collective commitment of federal and state actors, intervention agencies and elected representatives.
It emphasised that the appeal was entirely non-political, describing it as a humanitarian call aimed at protecting lives, improving economic activities, promoting educational development and restoring confidence in one of the most important transportation corridors in Ondo South.
NUOLGS reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful advocacy, constructive engagement and partnerships that advance the welfare of students and the general public, noting that it would continue to lend its voice and mobilise stakeholders until lasting action is taken to restore the Ore–Okitipupa Road to a safe, durable and motorable condition.
The union called on all relevant authorities to treat the matter with the urgency it deserves.
It stressed that the time to act is now, noting that the people have endured the hardship for far too long. The union warned that every delay places more lives at risk, weakens economic activities and deepens the suffering of thousands of commuters.
NUOLGS expressed confidence that through genuine collaboration and decisive leadership, hope can be restored, connectivity improved and the Ore–Okitipupa Road restored to a safe and reliable condition for the benefit of the people of Ondo South.
