APC Reviews Benue NASS Primaries, Replaces Candidates Loyal to Gov Alia

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has reviewed the outcome of the party’s National Assembly primaries in Benue State, replacing several candidates believed to be loyal to Governor Hyacinth Alia with aspirants aligned with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume.

The decision followed petitions filed by aggrieved aspirants who challenged the conduct and outcome of the primaries before the party’s appeal committee.

Among the key changes, the APC restored the senatorial tickets of incumbent lawmakers Emmanuel Udende and Titus Zam for Benue North-East and Benue North-West respectively. Both senators are regarded as allies of Akume.

The review also affected some House of Representatives primaries, with candidates backed by the SGF’s political camp replacing those who were initially declared winners.

However, the party retained the nominations of some candidates, including Hon. Prince Solomon Wombo for Katsina-Ala/Logo/Ukum Federal Constituency, Lady Blessing Onuh for Otukpo/Ohimini Federal Constituency, Chief Mrs. Regina Akume for Gboko/Tarka Federal Constituency and Pastor Ojotu Ojema for Apa/Agatu Federal Constituency.

The latest review reversed parts of the earlier primaries, which had largely favoured candidates believed to be loyal to Governor Alia and sparked protests and petitions from some aspirants over alleged irregularities.

The development is expected to deepen the political rivalry between Alia and Akume despite previous reconciliation efforts aimed at fostering unity within the ruling party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

As of the time of filing this report, the APC national leadership had yet to issue an official statement on the revised list of candidates.
