Human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has been remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja until Wednesday.
Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered his remand on Monday following the revocation of his bail last week.
The court also dismissed Sowore’s application seeking the recusal of Justice Umar from the case over comments in which he described President Bola Tinubu as a “criminal.”
Sowore is facing charges filed by the Department of State Services (DSS) in connection with the remarks, allegations he has denied.
Before Monday’s proceedings, Sowore had renewed his request for Justice Umar to recuse himself from the case, citing concerns over the conduct of the proceedings after members of his legal team withdrew from the matter.
Speaking after the court session, Sowore said he represented himself during the hearing after his lawyers declined to continue appearing before the judge.
“We had complained to the court that lawyers were mistreated by the judge and we applied to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court to transfer the case file, but they refused,” he said.
The activist also said his lawyers withdrew from the case due to their concerns about the proceedings.
The court had earlier revoked Sowore’s bail on June 16, 2026, after ruling that he was absent from proceedings. He had previously requested a new hearing date to enable him obtain new legal representation.
The case has continued amid legal arguments over the conduct of proceedings and the defence team’s concerns.
