Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has hinted that the 2027 general election could be his final attempt at becoming Nigeria’s president if he fails to win the race.
The former Anambra State governor made the comment while responding to a question from a secondary school student who asked whether he would consider another presidential run if he contested in 2027 but lost.
Obi explained that Nigeria’s power-sharing arrangement, which has traditionally influenced the rotation of the presidency between the North and South, would play a major role in shaping his future political decisions.
According to him, a loss in the 2027 election could see political calculations favour the North in 2031, meaning the presidency may not return to the South until another cycle.
He noted that by the time the opportunity could emerge again in the South, he would be approaching 78 years of age, a factor he believes could affect his ability to pursue another presidential ambition.
Obi, however, acknowledged that political circumstances can change and did not completely rule out the possibility of another attempt if the situation changes.
The former governor said his current thinking is based on the realities of age and Nigeria’s political structure, rather than a fixed position that cannot be altered.
