Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reportedly picked former Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, as his running mate on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general election.
According to The Guardian, the development reportedly followed weeks of negotiations within the coalition platform.
The decision is said to be aimed at strengthening regional balance ahead of the election.
Amaechi had previously stated that he was not positioning himself for a vice presidential role, insisting that he would contest the presidential primary directly and that no such offer had been formally made to him.
A close ally of Amaechi was quoted as saying Atiku assured that the vice presidential nominee would play significant roles in both the campaign and governance structure if they win the election.
In a statement marking Democracy Day on June 12, Atiku called on Nigerians to resist what he described as bad governance and political intimidation.
He said the country had witnessed increasing efforts to weaken opposition parties through internal crises, defections and pressure on political actors.
Atiku also accused the administration of President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) of undermining opposition structures and using state institutions in ways that threaten democratic balance.
