Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso is set to defect from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) next week, according to the Kwankwasiyya movement.
Spokesperson Habibu Mohammed told The Cable that the decision followed unanimous backing from stakeholders across Kano, with discussions with the NDC reportedly about 90 per cent complete.
He said Kwankwaso and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi are expected to join the NDC on Monday or Tuesday.
Mohammed linked the move to the ongoing leadership crisis in the ADC, describing the party as unstable following recent court rulings that returned its dispute to a lower court.
He added that stakeholders considered other parties but settled for the NDC due to legal uncertainties and time constraints ahead of INEC deadlines.
The development comes amid wider opposition realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, including ongoing debates over coalition arrangements and zoning.
